Dentists work in the muscles and proportions of the lower face every day, and the anatomy underlying a smile is the same anatomy that governs the lines around it. Treating them separately is how people end up with a beautiful new smile framed by a lip line that no longer suits it. Here the two are planned together.
Cosmetically it softens forehead lines, frown lines and crow's feet by relaxing the muscles that fold the skin. Clinically the same treatment is used for bruxism and jaw clenching, where relaxing an overactive masseter reduces grinding, protects teeth and often relieves associated jaw pain — and for a gummy smile caused by a hyperactive upper lip.
Dermal fillers restore volume and definition to cheeks, chin and jawline. In a practice that also does smile design, the reference point is your teeth: lip support, the way the upper lip sits at rest and when you smile, and how the lower third of the face balances against the new incisal edges. That is a different starting point from treating the lips as an isolated feature.
It should be difficult to identify what was done. The measure is proportion rather than volume, and that means occasionally recommending less than a patient asks for, or nothing at all. Every treatment carries risks, which will be set out with you before consent rather than after.

Cosmetic botulinum toxin typically lasts three to four months, after which muscle activity gradually returns and the treatment can be repeated. Duration varies with the area treated, the dose and individual metabolism.
Yes. Relaxing an overactive masseter muscle reduces the force of grinding, which protects the teeth and often relieves associated jaw and temple pain. It is frequently used alongside a night guard rather than instead of one.
They should not. A good result is judged by proportion, not volume, and the aim is that people notice you look well rather than that you have had something done. Where a request would look disproportionate, we will say so.
Most hyaluronic acid fillers last roughly six to eighteen months depending on the product, the area treated and how much movement that area sees. Lips generally metabolise filler faster than cheeks or jawline.
Facial anatomy is core dental training, and the lower face in particular is territory dentists work in daily. What matters in any setting is proper assessment, a documented consent discussion and a practitioner trained in the specific treatment — ask about all three wherever you go.
